The Mumbai Ahmedabad Bullet Train, India's first high-speed rail corridor, is making significant progress with a targeted full operational date by 2029. The 508 km corridor will connect major cities of Maharashtra and Gujarat, reducing the travel time from over 6 hours to just about 2 hours and 7 minutes with trains running at speeds up to 320 kmph.
Project Update
As of September 2025, the project has achieved remarkable milestones. The first 50-km stretch between Surat and Bilimora is expected to be operational by 2027. The full line will be commissioned progressively with the Thane-Ahmedabad section ready by 2028, and complete Mumbai-Ahmedabad operations by 2029. Heavy engineering construction, including track installation and turnout work at Surat station, is well underway.
The project features modern safety technologies such as vibration absorption mechanisms to handle high speeds and resilience against heavy wind and earthquakes. A significant 4.88 km tunnel breakthrough connecting Ghansoli and Shilphata was completed marking critical progress on underground sections.
Trial Begin Date
Trial runs for the bullet trains are currently happening in Japan on the Shinkansen trains destined for India. India's own trials are expected to commence by 2026, ahead of commercial launch in 2029.
